To ensure that gearboxes deliver both the reliability and minimal noise and vibration required in wind turbines and other applications, the gear industry has successfully adopted increasingly more demanding metrology processes to meet the ever increasing precision of the design intent. However, these developments are based upon traditional metrology methods and measurement standards, advanced metrology methods have not been exploited. This paper will give a state of the art review of the measurements required in the manufacture and operation of contemporary gearboxes coupled with a review of the opportunities advanced metrology processes could offer.
