Attritioning has been a method of improving mineral extraction for over 60 years, however it is only recently that an understanding of the mechanism employed and the improvement in efficiency that have been achieved. The paper will discuss these improvements and how to overcome the problems that have been raised. At present there is a dearth of information on the correct design and operation of these machines. The paper will address these issues as well as fluid on the Zeta potential, micro shear, retention residence time and pilot plant operation. A study on the hydrodynamics of attritioner operation has been identified and will be discussed. Surface chemistry, clean lines of attrition material and the treatment of fines significant advances in the understanding of attritioning highlighted.
