The most common models for estimating seed dormancy loss and germination responses are based on a thermal time approach. Under Mediterranean climate, germination is mainly limited to winter, however high mountain plants seem to differ from "typical alpines" for which spring germination is reported, highlighting the need of more in-depth studies for these species. Here we discuss, by presenting different case studies, how thermal thresholds for germination may be used to model the field emergence of threatened species under climate change scenarios.
