Consumer acceptance of Solid State Lighting (SSL) requires the provision of unambiguous measurements of the energy efficiency and lighting quality of these lighting products. This requires validated photometric data to be produced by a network of accredited testing laboratories using accepted methodologies. There are a number of challenges involved in the measurement of the efficiency of SSL products, due to differences between SSL and traditional lighting technologies. In order to address these issues, NPL's Measurement Network formed the Solid State Lighting Metrology working group, which has conducted a round robin test of commercially available SSL products at a number of UK testing laboratories. The results of this comparison are presented in this paper. The aim is to increase the quality and confidence of SSL laboratory test results and to contribute to other national and international activities enabling the harmonisation of SSL performance testing.
