LIGHTING FOR HEALTH: BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF TRADITIONAL AND SSL ILLUMINATION

The lighting world is undergoing rapid changes with rising applicability of LEDs for general lighting, called solid state lighting or SSL. At the same time, so-called biological or non-visual effects of light are intensively studied in terms of relevant light characteristics and benefits for the users. Application studies in different fields have shown that it is possible to stimulate the biological system with traditional and new artificial lighting solutions. With either technology, the specific spectral properties of the receptors, their arrangement in the retina and a timing aligned to the lighting change in the natural environment have to be taken into account to achieve beneficial non-visual effects of light.
