Water systems are facing new challenges in the context of the environmental impact of water use. The article aims to explain the Smart water concept which is an approach of Integrated Water Resources Management. The target is an open infrastructure able to take into account existing systems and facilitating future implementations required by business evolutions. This open infrastructure shall support the whole urban water cycle. After presentation of the concept, the article presents the implementation of such a system to manage a drinking water distribution network. The domain of water distribution (as urban drainage) is difficult to monitor and manage because it is spatially spread out and it is difficult to get data due to of the cost of installation of equipment along the network. New technologies allow to implement an up-to-date end to end system to improve operational tools: network of sensors, communication infrastructure and information system hosting all the business functions.
