Causticizing As a Mass Transfer Limited Reaction and Implications

The objective of this work is to develop a new causticizing process to increase causticizing conversion with reduced resident times. This was accomplished by controlling the burnt lime particle size distribution and increasing the causticizing temperature above 100 °C. Control of particle size distribution enabled the development of a mass transfer based model that fits the experimental data with fewer constants then the existing empirical models. Since the reaction is described as liquid phase mass transfer limited, the mixing and the low temperature dependence, observed in both laboratory studies and practice, is consistent with the model. This work can be used to develop new high temperature causticizing processes.
