A Compact Dual-Band Antenna Based on SIW Technology

In this paper, a compact dual-band antenna based on substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) technology is proposed. The antenna is comprised by three layers. The top layer is a SIW cavity-backed slot antenna while the middle layer is a quarter-mode SIW (QMSIW) antenna. A microstrip feeding line is configured on the bottom layer connecting to a vertically-oriented probe penetrating through the three layers to feed the antenna. Full-wave simulations show that two operational bands with unidirectional radiation along broadside direction are successfully achieved at 2.6 and 5.9 GHz. The fractional bandwidths are equal to 1.54% and 2.71%, respectively. The overall size of the antenna is 33mm×43mm×5. 23mm, which is extremely compact. Moreover, parametric studies revealed that the two bands can be tuned separately by adjusting the appropriate design parameters.
