In order to reduce the noise caused by partial discharges from contaminated insulators, we investigated the effect of hydrophobic insulator surface coating, specifically the effects of coating materials, thickness and position. Long term performance was also investigated by the accelerated ageing test of 275-kV full scale insulator strings. Investigation results show the effectiveness to reduce the noises by applying coatings to overall- or bottom-surfaces of all the disc type insulator units.
