At the Auguste Victoria colliery roadways are developed by using both roadheaders and drilling and blasting technology. Future road heading activities are mainly concentrated on the seam level of Zollverein 6 [EB: Zv. 7/8], at a maximum depth of 1,405 m. Difficult geological frame conditions, particularly the structure of the hanging wall, consisting in an approximately 5 m thick water sensitive, sand free, banded shale rock with a superposing sandstone layer as well as tectonic faults and displacement zones, make great demands on planning, technology, organisation and work safety for accomplishing the heading aims. In order to fulfil the demands on future high performance mining work and to minimize unkeep costs of seam routed roads at Zollverein 6 level, with growing depth road heading at the Auguste Victoria mine consequently is performed by using combined support, which means rock bolting with arch support an backfilling."Within the framework of the presentation the specifics of road heading at Zollverein 6 level, resulting from geological frame conditions, will be stated. The main focus of the considerations lies in a comparison of conventional and mechanical heading technology regarding to rock bolting and process-typical characteristics.
