Recent Scientific Development and Requirement on the Yellow River

This paper summarizes the major scientific development in recent years on the Yellow River: ①on flood control and disaster reduction,mainly including satellitebased Yellow River Basin water monitoring and river forecast system,theories and technology for wandering river harnessing,technology for underwater footstone detection,removable non-emergency submerged dam technology,technology for dyke safety and danger prevention and technology of ice monitoring on the Ningxia-Inner Mongolia reaches,etc; ②on water and sediment regulation,mainly including theory and practice of water and sediment regulation,operation mode of the Xiaolangdi Reservoir during the late stage of silt detention,water and sediment regulation system and joint operation technology and so on; ③on water resources management and regulation,mainly including unified Yellow River water resources management and regulation,theory and practice of water right transfer,etc.; ④on water resources protection,mainly including the goal of ecological protection and ecological water demand in the Yellow River basin,water pollutant migration and transformation process and forecast technique under the condition of hyperconcentration flow,etc; ⑤on water and soil conservation,mainly including recent water and sediment change response on the middle Yellow River,technology of evaluation,prediction and simulation of soil and water loss on the Loess Plateau,and functional mechanism and optimized arrangement of soil and water conservation measures,etc.; and ⑥ breakthrough progress has been achieved in index system of the Yellow River healthy life,construction of mathematical simulation system,and theory and technology of physical models.The paper also presents scientific requirements for keeping of the Yellow River healthy life and social and economic sustainable and harmonious development in the basin,mainly including: ①prediction of change process and tendency of the Yellow River water and sediment situation; ②theories and technology of water and sediment regulation in the basin;③support of the strictest water resources management technology; ④the Yellow River sediment disposal and resources use technology; ⑤river training and floodplain harnessing on the lower Yellow River; ⑥anti-erosion and growth promotion technology in soft sandstone areas on the Loess Plateau; ⑦major technologies for the Guxian Key Water Control Project and the west line of south-to-north water transfer project; and ⑧construction of the Yellow River mathematical simulation system with the river natural process-ecological environment process-social-economic process coupling.
