Bioremediation is becoming an economic approach for the cleanup of sites contaminated with hydrophobic organic compounds (HOC),but its effectiveness is usually limited by the low bioavailability of hydrocarbon for its low water solubility.The biosurfactants,which are surface-active compounds produced by various microorganisms,increase the surface area of hydrophobic water-insoluble substrates and increase their bioavailability,thereby enhancing the growth of bacteria and the rate of bioremediation.
