With the ever increasing penetration of wind power in modern electric networks, international grid codes have been constantly under revision for the last decade. Emerging grid codes enforce stringent regulations on large wind power plants to 1) ride through various fault conditions, 2) provide reactive power support to the network, and 3) participate in the primary frequency support and power oscillations damping. This paper presents a comprehensive literature review of the enabling technologies that have been suggested for various fixed- and variable-speed wind generators to comply with the latest international grid code requirements.
