A group G is said to be capable if it is isomorphic to a central quotient of some group K; that is, G≌ K/Z(K). We survey three different approaches to the question of which groups are and which are not capable, with particular emphasis on p-groups. We discuss the historical connection with Philip Hall's program to classify p-groups up to isoclinism, and how the different approaches interconnect.
