This work deals with developing a methodology under the form of an algorithmic procedure to e used as a road map for systematizing/resolving knowledge problems on environmental management within an industrial ecology framework. The case of waste biomass, used as an adsorbent in wastewater treatment, is analyzed by means of a conceptual optimization tradeoff between enhancing adsorptivity and bio-waste treatment cost, in order to determine optimal treatment intensification. Experimental work is presented to support this view and two topics are discussed in brief, in order to indicate the role that (i) spatial determination of the system under consideration and (ii) environmental standards imposed by legislation, may play for using effectively the corresponding industrial ecology framework.
