摘要

The arrival of four Visiting Professors at Newcastle University provided the opportunity for collaborative working across the Engineering Faculty. The VPs used their knowledge as practising engineers to develop a modular course which has been offered since 1994 to students in all five major engineering disciplines taught at NU. The objective is to provide students with an appreciation of the processes and techniques by which professional engineers manage engineering projects in order to deliver successfully against the key drivers of cost, time & quality. The module is completed over one academic year via a series of lectures and a team project. It is taught by the VPs themselves, illustrated by worked examples from their own diverse industrial backgrounds. Both manufactured (production line) and complex made-to-order products are considered, although this paper makes special reference to the latter due to the context of the Conference.
