As municipalities are required to address constituents of emerging concern (i.e., NDMA and 1,4-dioxane in water reuse applications), the use of the ultraviolet light and hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2) advanced oxidation process (AOP) option is likely to increase. The CDPH draft groundwater recharge reuse regulations require 1.2-log removal of NDMA and 0.5-log removal of 1,4-dioxane with an AOP. This trend calls for the establishment of guidelines for UV/H2O2 system specifications and evaluation. This paper proposes a methodology that can be used as a basis to establish specifications that must be delivered by the manufacturer to achieve treatment objectives, as well as for routine monitoring. The proposed approach mirrors the widely accepted National Water Research Institute (NWRI) Ultraviolet Disinfection Guidelines for Drinking Water and Water Reuse (2003), which are very similar to the approach EPA now employs (EPA UV Disinfection Guidance Manual, 2006).
