From the perspective of sustainable manufacturing, machine tool has been defined as one of the most energy consuming products and it has a great potential for environmental impact. Therefore, technologies for monitoring, analyzing, evaluating, and optimizing energy consumption as well as environmental impact of machining systems are critical for decision makers. Modeling and simulation can be an effective tool for the success of sustainable manufacturing through its ability to test various alternative designs, ideas, and processes before actual implementation. In this paper, a methodology is proposed to analyze energy consumption and carbon emissions quantitatively and systematically at shop-floor level based on ProModel simulation. The objective of this paper is to evaluate energy consumption and carbon emissions of machining systems at shop-floor level and to provide guidance for machine manufacturers and decision makers. The paper is structured in three parts. Firstly, the algorithms for calculating energy consumption and carbon emissions are described. Then, a quantitatively analyze module is developed in order to calculate energy consumption and carbon emissions automatically. Finally, a case study is introduced to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.
