Electromagnetism-like mechanism (EM) algorithm, a heuristic for global optimization, utilizes an attraction-repulsion mechanism to move the sample points towards the optimality. The original EM has a strong ability for diversification. And a simple random line search algorithm for local search has been added to improve its intensification. However, its efficiency is bad and the performance of the original EM isn't satisfactory. Therefore, in this paper, a modified Solis and Wets local search is proposed to improve the performance of the EM. The results of numerical experiments show that the novel EM performs much better than the initial one as well as the EM with original Solis and Wet local search in terms of accuracy.
