Role of Government

With each year the world population becomes increasingly distanced from the original sources of its food supply. By 2015 more than half the global population will live in cities, many in metropolises of more than 10 million people. While the individual retains the final decision as to what to eat, governments will have ever more control over what options are available to them. The question is whether governments will use this power positively to enhance the nutrition and health of people, drawing onthe best scientific knowledge available, or ignore the opportunity and, worse, succumb to political and commercial pressures that will result in unnecessarily poor diets.
