To say that carbonate pore space is highly variable, is complex, and comes in many forms, is an understatement. For this complexity to be better understood, it is best to group carbonate pore space on the basis of some meaningful criteria. Groupings are commonly based on some measure of pore size, such as k/phi, pore-throat size, or visible pore size. To be useful, the petrophysical properties need to be distributed in 3D space, which is best done by linking properties to geologic models. Carbonate pore space must therefore be grouped into geologically meaningful pore types, as well as pore sizes.
