COMPLICATION OF URETERAL SURGERY

Ureteral obstruction secondary to urolithiasis is the most common indication for ureteral surgery in dogs and cats.The most common complications reported following ureterotomy are leakage and stricture formation. The most common short term complication reported following ureteral stent placement is dysuria. Long term complications include urinary tract infection, pollakiuria, hematuria, tissue ingrowth, stent migration, ureteritis and reflux.Prospective studies comparing traditional surgery to the novel technique of stenting with regards to complications and long term outcome are necessary in guiding treatment recommendations.
