Energy conserved geo-routing in ad hoc networks

An energy-efficient grid based geographic routing scheme for wireless ad hoc networks is presented in this paper. The proposal presented here does not rely on location information. The dependency on global location information limits location aided flooding's usefulness. In addition, geographic proximity does not always lead to network connectivity. The traditional location aided flooding make very conservative connectivity assumptions because it guesses are based on a radio model. Being conservative requires more nodes to stay active than necessary, leading to less energy conservation. These facts induces to present a grid based Energy Conservation geographical routing protocol (EGRP), which, unlike location aided flooding, does not rely on location information. Further, EGRP itself directly and adaptively measures network connectivity which helps to find network redundancy more accurately to conserve more energy. The energy conservation is done by nullifying grid subspace and initiate to switch off the redundant node radio signal to reduce redundant transmissions. Simulations are carried to show the performance of EGRP in terms of energy consumption, network lifetime and propagation delay compared to that of traditional location aided flood geo routing.
