Congestion Control Algorithms of Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless sensor network plays a major role in various activities such as health, transportation, environment, etc. Wireless sensor network is deployed using large number of sensor nodes that acquire real time information and transmit it over. As large numbers of nodes are simultaneously transmitting, congestion in the data packets due to buffer overflow, channel contention, or packet collision is possible and hence packet loss performance degradation might take place. As such a congestion control algorithm for lossless data packet transmission is required. In ad hoc and sensor networks, the task of congestion control is quite expensive. This paper reviews some of newly existing techniques for detecting and controlling congestion such as congestion detection and avoidance, traffic adaptive MAC, congestion control and fairness. In addition, different performance metrics for measuring congestion is also presented. Finally, a comparison between the performances of the various congestion control techniques is presented in as well.
