A short historical review shows that not long ago, the tasks of an electrode regulation system were limited to the movement of the electrodes and the maintenance of a predetermined set value. However, the recent further development of EAFs by furnace designers has resulted in numerous electrode regulation innovations, without which the operation of the new generation furnaces would be impossible. The global fall in demand in the steel sector has resulted in enormous price pressure on producers and this can only be counteracted through the use of modern and efficient plant. Important process technology advances facilitate the necessary economies, while the massive increase in automation levels boosts productivity and reduces standstill times. All these changes add up to fresh challenges for electrode regulation systems and in the last few years, their range of assignments has been supplemented by important tasks from the process automation field. ArCOS electrode regulation, which has been proven all over the world in more than 200 installations, faces these challenges and has helped to promote the major innovations of the recent past.
