EES Coke Battery is a whole owned subsidiary of DTE Energy Services. The No. 5 Coke battery on Zug Island, Detroit MI was rebuilt by National Steel from the pad up in 1992. In 1997 DTE Energy Services purchased the battery from National Steel. National Steel operated the battery and DTEES managed the plant by contractual agreement. In 2002 National Steel declares bankruptcy. In 2003 US Steel purchases the assets of National Steel. The contract between National Steel and DTEES could not be successfully renegotiated with US Steel and DTEES decided to take over the operations of the Coke Battery. In October of 2004 DTEES took over the management and operations of the coke battery. The idea program at EES Coke Battery is the life blood of many of the best things happening in the plant today. Many people use this program to make their everyday tasks safer, better and easier. When I was an operator, I knew that there had to be a better way to set the battery machines up on the correct oven. It wasn't until I moved into the instrumentation department that the way to make this task easier came into being. The existing process for setting these multiple ton machines into place was a laser pointing to an arbitrary location on the battery. These arbitrary locations would shift due to ambient conditions causing each operator to put the laser at a different location. Working with the video equipment already in use at EES Coke Battery, the idea formed to use video looking at the oven doors and charging hole lids to spot the machines on the correct oven. Ease of operation and maintenance makes this the correct choice.
