Work roll temperature and thermal crown are crucial for strip shape and flatness control as well as quality of Hot Rolling products. Mathematical models are available to predict both temperature and thermal crown, however, actual measurement is needed to verify and calibrate these models. In addition, work roll temperature needs to be controlled for the production of quality steel. Using Epac hand-held skate unit, work roll temperatures and surface profile across the roll were measured in both hot and cold stages. Meanwhile, the work roll cooling system was analyzed and tested to improve heat removal efficiency of the system in order to avoid occasional high work roll temperature. This paper presents the findings of this work.
