Primary goals of the steel industry, also after the world crisis, continue to be high quality products, energy saving, environmental care and last but not least, overall production costs cutting. During the recent years Tenova started R&D projects, in the framework of FlexyTech Furnace concept, for pursuing all the mentioned goals in the industrial reheating furnaces with a special focus on NO_x emissions and fuel consumption reduction. Environmental legislations, especially after April 2002, when the Kyoto protocol on climate change became effective, assign performance targets for fossil-fired reheating furnaces ever stricter. By 2020 furnace technologists are challenged to seek a further ~90% improvement in NO_x emissions and a fuel consumption reduction of 20-30%. The present paper illustrates the development carried out by Tenova in cooperation with CSM (Centro Sviluppo Materiali) of the latest generation of FlexyTech flameless regenerative burner which assure on the reheating furnaces both the advantages of the flameless combustion technology for very low NO_x emissions and of the regenerative technology for higher energy efficiency. An overview is given on the state of the art of the latest reheating furnaces as far as concerns NO_x emissions and CO_2 production which is strictly related to the energy efficiency or to the fuel consumption.
