The March 11,2011, earthquake and tsunami that devastated a large area of the Japanese coast took a terrible toll in lives lost and homes and infrastructure destroyed. This tragedy was exacerbated by the loss of core cooling to 3 of 6 Fukushima Daiichi reactors, the subsequent severe damage to those cores, the destruction of the Unit 1,3, and 4 reactor buildings along with apparent damage to the Unit 2 pressure containment vessel from hydrogen explosions, and the release of large amounts of radioactivity to the environment.
