The United States Navy has a critical need for improved power systems for unmanned undersea vehicle (UUV) systems. Power and energy density are critically deficient in current UUV platforms, and limit mission time and capability of current systems. Battery powered systems will not meet the mission profiles of next generation UUVs (including persistent surveillance, mine detection and anti-submarine missions). Achieving high power density at all levels will greatly enhance future UUV capabilities.
