Hydrogen has been used as a commodity in the chemical industry for many decades. Large hydrogen generation plants are typically co-located with large chemical complexes. This hydrogen is most often produced by steam methane reforming, followed by purification and compression. Hydrogen users outside these chemical complexes are usually supplied with either liquefied or compressed hydrogen, which is transported via truck. Conventional hydrogen tube trailers and cylinders are filled to 2,500 psi, while new composite tank materials permit storage and transport at up to 6,000 psi. Hydrogen compression is achieved by a variety of mechanical compressor technologies, which require lubrication and frequent maintenance because of moving parts that are inherent to their function. More efficient and reliable compression technology is needed to reduce the cost of hydrogen delivery.
