Unmanned, undersea vehicles (UUV) provide the U.S. Navy and commercial companies with a wide range of capabilities, including mine countermeasures, Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance (ISR), fleet protection, undersea survey missions and inspection of oil and gas platforms. Current and anticipated energy storage systems based solely on high-energy density batteries will not provide the range or endurance required to meet expanding mission goals. Advanced power and energy storage systems with increased specific energy of 500 W-hr/kg and greater are necessary.
