Hydrous pyrolysis (HP), also known as hydrothermal liquefaction, has gained much attention in recent years as a method for the production of biofuels from algae. The recent interest in using HP to produce biofuels from algae is motivated by the by the advantages HP poses over other conversion techniques. These include eliminating the need for drying the algae before treatment, suitability of algae as a feedstock, and the high energy efficiency of the hydrothermal process.
