Tetronic acids are a common motif of many medicinal agents. A Zn(II) equivalent complex has been synthesized and its X-ray structrure has been elucidated.The tetronic acid (4-hydroxybutenolide) moiety which possesses the β-diketo functionality is a common constituent in many natural products [1, 2]. The molecule of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is a classical example of this type of structure. Such products have shown to exhibit extensive biological activities including antibiotic, antiviral, antineoplastic, and anticoagulant activity. Examples of compounds which have been isolated from natural products and exhibit such activity are tetronasin [3], RK-682 [1]. Tetronic acids have caught the attention of chemists and biologists due to their high affinity to biological effectors such as simple metal cations to complex enzymes [4].
