H.264/AVC adopts brand-new intra prediction technology to encode frames efficiently, but the computational complexity restricts it's real-time application in a way. In this paper, a new fast intra prediction algorithm of mode decision is proposed based on analyzing the intra encode principle of H.264 and texture feature of macro blocks(MBs). Firstly, the algorithm checks peripheral blocks of image, predicts them with 16*16 mode, then selects mode for current MB using the threshold of SAD(Sum of Absolute Difference) which is set by relativity of neighboring MBs, and further ensure the prediction mode according to texture direction of MB. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm enhances coding speed while maintaining the coding quality. It's beneficial to real-time application of H.264.
