Preliminary Research on Degradation of Nitrate Nitrogen by Supported Zero-valent Iron

The purpose of this paper was to study the degradation of nitrate nitrogen by zero-valent iron (ZVI) which was supported on the surface of cation exchanging resin. The reduction results of nitrate nitrogen were tested at different concentration, temperature, pH value and added amount of zero-valent iron under the condition that supported ZVI was dispersed in aqueous solution. Study showed that 30°C was the best degradation temperature with the reduction efficiency 98.38%. And the degradation efficiency will be promoted to a certain extent in an acidic condition. Increasing the amount of added ZVI will also enhance the degradation efficiency. The best results would be achieved at 30°C, an acidic solution and 5 g addition of supported ZVI. One benefit of this method was that Fe2+ oxidized from the degradation of nitrate nitrogen could be reexchanged to the resin surface and regenerated to ZVI by NaBH4 for recycling use.
