Preparation of Magnetic Chelating Resin and its Application in Removal of Heavy Metal Ions

A core-shell magnetic chelating resin was developed via the reaction between polyethyleneimine and chloromethylthiirane on the surface of yglycidoxypropyltrimethoxy silane pre-treated Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Elemental analyzer and thermogravimetric analyzer results suggested that the chelating resin was covalently bonded onto the surface of Fe3O4. Transmission electron microscopy image and magnetic analysis showed that the magnetic chelating resin appeared quite uniform in diameter, and exhibited superparamagnetic characteristics, which were the premises for its manipulation under an external magnetic field. Adsorption and desorption tests were carried out using Hg (II) ions as targets. Results showed that the magnetic chelating resin exhibited good capability of adsorbing Hg (II) ions. Moreover, desorption results demonstrated that the desorption efficiency of ions adsorbed magnetic chelating resin is up to 96.72%. The above results indicated a good prospect for the magnetic chelating resin in practical applications for the removal of heavy metal ions from water and wastewater.
