Behaviour of Selected Sex Hormones in Synthetic Influent of a Pilot-Scale Wastewater Treatment Plant

The concentration of seven sex hormones, namely, estradiol (E2), estrone (El), estriol (E3), ethynilestradiol (EE2), testosterone (TEST), androstenedione (AND) and progesterone (PROG), was studied over time in the liquid and solid phases of a synthetic wastewater to clarify the interactions between them and the non-soluble components. While the concentration of TEST, AND and PROG stayed constant, E2, El, E3 and EE2 disappeared in the feed at low temperature. The possible causes investigated were irreversible adsorption onto the solid components and/or abiotic reactions.
