Currently, fewer than ten biocide actives are available globally for the wet state preservation of paints and coatings, or to preserve the aesthetics and paint film integrity from microbial growth. In the near future, regulations implemented in Europe, for example the Biocidal Product Directive (BPD), may limit the permitted use levels of these biocides to concentrations below the antimicrobial effective levels. In addition, classification and labeling of biocidal actives following the criteria set by the Dangerous Substances Directive (DSD, soon to be replaced by the Globally Harmonized System GHS), may introduce unwelcome labels to the final preserved product. Furthermore, under REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals), fewer raw materials may become available in the future as effective carriers for the biocides. Along with these regulatory requirements, manufacturers/customers are increasingly demanding eco-friendly raw materials. The challenges to meet regulatory, environmental, and end-use customers' requirements are real and increasingly urgent. Many paints, raw materials, as well as biocides manufacturers are reformulating their products to meet these rigorous standards. To address these challenges, a new formulation strategy was developed around the biocides that can be used as building blocks for in-can and dry film preservation. The benefits, the properties, as well as the compatibility and overall performance in various paint matrices will be presented.
