THE EFFECT OF INORGANIC PARTICLES IN POLYMERIC MATRICES OF ADHESIVES

Solvent-based adhesives have been widely employed in the market. However, the increasing appeal and demand for environmentally friendly products has driven the companies forward to develop new products, especially water-based adhesives. Nevertheless, the waterborne technology still presents some disadvantages compared to solventborne technology, as drying time, process and storage stability, and mainly adhesion properties as green strength and thermal resistance. Previous studies have shown that better mechanical, thermal and optical properties can be obtained by the insertion of inorganic ingredients into the organic matrices of adhesives. The combination of organic polymers-inorganic particles has attracted great attention because of the synergistic effect, which combine the best properties of both components. In this work, tests with different inorganic particles added into polyurethane and polychloroprene waterborne adhesives were performed. The combination of inorganic particles as ZnO, SiO_2 and clays with PU or CR dispersions allows the formulation of adhesives with useful properties. Anyway, it is very important to adjust and to control the viscosity of the formulations in order to produce adhesives with good stability.
