Assets making up the transmission grid require regular maintenance during their lifetime. Some of this maintenance can be carried out while the asset is in service (e.g. live line work) while other maintenance activities require the asset, along with certain adjacent assets, to be removed from service. The removal of assets from service to carry out maintenance activities degrades the capability of the grid to meet load and may reduce security and reliability. Asset outages are usually carried out at times of lower grid loading when the grid is capable of meeting load even when some assets are not available and under good environmental conditions (e.g. during mild summer conditions rather than during winter storms).
