Ad hoc networks consist of a set of identical nodes that move freely and independently and communicate with other node via wireless links. Such networks may be logically represented as a set of clusters by grouping together nodes that are in close proximity with one another. Clusterheads form a virtual backbone and may be used to route packets for nodes in their cluster. In this paper, a routing scheme called dual backup routing is proposed. The main idea of the proposed scheme is to extend the hop-by-hop multipath to a cluster-by-cluster multipath. In the proposed scheme, data packets can be delivered using the union of the dual main routes and dual backup routes. Simulation results indicate that the scheme outperforms AODV-BR.
