Pyrocarbon reinforced by bamboo-shaped carbon nanofibers was fabricated using thermal gradient chemical vapor deposition. The deposit is composed of pyrocarbon flake and defined as low texture according to the classification proposed by Huttinger; the diameter of bamboo-shaped carbon nanofibers ranges from a few decades to about 250nm. At the wall of the bamboo-shaped nanofibers, the graphene planes tangle each other and the interior of nanofiber are stacked randomly by nanosized graphitic materials. The bulk density of the pyrocarbon is about 1.77 g/cm~3 and the lowest flexural strength is 138.71MPa. The compressive strength of pyrocarbon parallel to and perpendicular to the basal plane are 336.71MPa and 196.98MPa, respectively.
