Lisianthus (Eustoma grandiflora L.) is a plant to which aluminum supply causes twice extension of cut flowers vase life. In the present study a possible relationship between the activity of oxygen species scavenging stimulation of the growth of rooted cuttings of Lisianthus under treatment with aluminum (Al) was examined.Rooted cuttings were grown in a modified,. strength Hoagland nutrient solution for 10 days. After adaptation to new media the plants were treated with aluminum (AlCl3) in concentration of 0.88 mM at a constant pH of 4.5 for 24 and 96 hours. Activity of PPO and certain non-enzymatic antioxidants as well as lignin content of roots were examined. In comparison with the control samples (without Al), the activities of antioxidant compounds in roots significantly increased by Al, whereas the activity of polyphenol oxidase, the content of lignin and wall_bound phenolics decreased. The results indicated that Al-induced decrease in wall-bound phenols, lignin and polyphenol oxidase in roots can be considered as a reason for effects of Al on the extensibility of cell walls and extension of the life of Lisianthus.
