Fundamental studies on the effect of soil moisture variations on observed backscattering signatures behavior of vegetated land surfaces are reported. Different L-band SAR systems have been used including ALOS/PALSAR, ALOS-2/PALSAR-2, Pi-SAR-L2, and GB-SAR. Using (partial) polarimetric decomposition accurate soil moisture estimates can be obtained under low vegetation covers. Implementations for the ongoing development of an advanced forest monitoring system are discussed.
