A Sustainable Strategy for Reduction of Green House Gas Emission and Waste Management in Agro-Based Industries

Consumer based society is the result of urbanization, ever increasing population and industrial growth. Such development implies accumulation of wastes which for various environmental reasons need to be properly managed. Currently, the potential threat of climate change represents one of the environmental concerns worldwide. Consequently for climate change, most of the developed countries are implementing measures at different levels in order to tackle GHG's emissions by using various alternative measures of waste management such as sanitary landfill, incineration, anaerobic digestion and bio-composting. Among these methods, the biocomposting of organic wastes is preferred strategy of utilizing the organic waste treatment byproduct. During composting, part of the organic matter is mineralised to CO2, NH3 and H2O but their contribution towards climate change is lesser than that of landfill, anaerobic digestion and pyrolysis etc and the remainig part of organic matter is transformed into humic substances, which are introduced to soils. This amended soil may strongly influence the behaviour of organic xenobiotics and enhance the C sink capacity of agriculture soils. Elemental analysis (C, H, N) and E4/E6 ratio of humic acid extracted from the composted wastes of agro-based industries and amended soil was carried out to justify bio-conversion (composting) of organic waste. Thus, use of humic acid as soil amendment is a win-win strategy in waste management and in reducing the GHG's.
