Binaural Loudness Summation for Narrowband Sounds in Dichotic Conditions

In an earlier work on overall loudness perception in dichotic conditions, the effects of interaural level difference (ILD) and frequency on binaural loudness summation were investigated for pure tones. The result of the research indicated that the overall loudness should be described as the function of ILD and frequency rather than simply using the arithmetic mean calculated from left and right ear. In the present follow-up investigation, the effects of ILD, frequency and bandwidth on binaural loudness summation is studied, using narrowband sounds under dichotic conditions. 26 listeners participated in the subjective experiment matching the loudness of the dichotic narrowband sounds to 1kHz pure tone, the loudness of which can be easily calculated from the sound pressure level (SPL). These loudness matches were obtained with a free-level-adjustment procedure manipulated by the participants. By comparing with the previous conclusions for pure tones, the influence of bandwidth is discussed. The change tendency of the ILDs effect as the bandwidth of the test signal becomes wider will also be introduced.
