A novel Ca/P-containing mesoporous silica-based xerogels (CMSX) with good degradability and low heat generation were synthesized for hemorrhage control. The CaMSX formulated in the average pore diameter of 2.5-3 nm were prepared by a modified sol-gel process and physicochemically characterized. For comparison, the mesoporous silica-based xerogels without Ca/P (MSX) was also prepared. The in vitro whole blood clotting time, activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and prothrombin time (PT) of the CaMSX were measured with MSX, Chinese traditional medicin-Yunnan medical powder (YM), as well as traditional zeolite as control. The results illustrated that the CaMSX could remarkably promote the intrinsic and extrinsic blood coagulation processes, and the coagulation processes greatly depend on the dosage and the content of Ca in the CMSX. And the synthesized CMSX had better efficiency in promoting coagulation process than that of MSX, YM and zeolite. Therefore, this prepared amorphous CMSX with good biodegradable property and low heat generation was a novel promising hemostatic materials.
