Electrode materials play an important role on the performance of Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs),which is regarded as a promising and sustainable technology for wastewater treatment.In this paper,recent progress of anode and cathode materials for MFCs and their application for different kinds of wastewater treatment are minireviewed,which would gain a comprehensive insight into the electrodes materials options for the design of cost-effective MFCs.It focuses on the characteristics,application and modification of traditional anode material such as graphite rods (felt),graphite particles,graphite brush and carbon cloth/paper.Cathode materials and cathode catalysts are also summarized and compared.Some existing problems/drawbacks of electrode materials in current MFCs are disclosed,and outlook for future development is also suggested.
