The use of SAR images to detect the inshore frontal zone of the Brazil Current (BC) in Campos Basin, in the SW South Atlantic, near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is discussed in the context of using such information together with GHRSST-PP thermal maps for initializing a regional ocean model. The need of using GODAE maps is tied to the frequent extensive cloud cover in the region. However, it has been observed that these infrared/ microwave SST data do not resolve adequately the thermal field at the BC front, making it difficult its positioning. Combining the ability of extracting BC front from the SAR images together with SST values of GODAE and using the methodology of Feature Oriented Regional Model to compose the 3-D field of mass and currents seems a promising alternative.
